Create a "mystery box" filled with images or replicas of ancient artifacts from various civilizations (ex., Egyptian, Greek, Roman). Have students guess which civilization the artifacts belong to and encourage them to explain their reasoning. Introduce students to myths and legends from ancient civilizations, such as Greek gods or Egyptian creation stories. Offer students the option to demonstrate an understanding of Ancient Egypt and modify their technology skills by creating a virtual field trip using Google My Maps, reviewed here. Whether teaching and learning in your classroom or remotely you may want to use one of the following tools for students to report their learning. Use Google My Maps to include important places in Egypt along with images, video, and text explanations of events. Use this site as a starting point to learn about Egyptian Gods for world history and ancient religions classes. It is also an excellent introduction to a unit on Egypt for young learners. Put a link to this site on a classroom computer as an activity center for the Egyptian unit of study. Assign student pairs or small groups a god and to research the myths about that god. Students could create a class book retelling a favorite myth for each god using Creative Common images to illustrate the myth. To find Creative Commons images for student projects (with credit, of course), try Wikimedia Commons, reviewed here. Images and myths can be completed in Classroom Authors, reviewed here, for actual book production. It's a writing activity that teaches about myths from fifteen regions of the world. Read the myths of ancient Greece. On this page, find directions to write your own myth with Jane Yolen's help. Lessons instruct the learning of the characteristics of a myth through reading, comparisons, and making inferences. Learn about Quetzalcoatl, the spirit of love from Central America, Osiris, the lord of all things from Egypt, and many others. There is much here to explore for all ages! The Interactive Brainstorming Machine still requires Flash.

In the Classroom
After you choose your level, discover one or many of the lessons to integrate into your English Language Arts or Social Studies curriculum. Choose your objectives, and find the lessons that are appropriate. Some lessons can be shared on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Others are more appropriate alone as individual work. Materials are included so much of the prep work is already done for you. To conclude the myths unit, have students create a play featuring a unique culture and a hero they create. Students will need a detailed script containing; theme, plot, settings, and characters including a hero. Go as far as you want developing props, costumes, and accompanying sounds and music. Have students present using a live presentation, video, or digital storytelling. Choose from the TeachersFirst Digital Storytelling tools, reviewed here. This site is a great reference for an after-school enrichment program on writing, reading, book clubs, or even self esteem.

It's certainly not difficult to find websites about Ancient Egypt, but NOVA provides an absolutely stunning interactive look at major Egyptian historical landmarks and objects. Take a 360-degree glance at the Great Pyramid or an ancient tomb, browse photo galleries, study cross-sections or examine artifacts from every possible vantage point. You can access these features from a number of search options: chronological, geographical, or by media type. Some of the features require Flash, but most of the valuable information doesn't.

Explore the Nile with Nakht-Amun, an ordinary ancient Egyptian! Dig below the glamour and glitz of Pharaohs and pyramids to discover the daily life of ordinary Egyptians. This simple and delightful site offers an easy-to-read tour through everyday ancient life at home and in school followed by a quiz. Each section contains a nugget of information accompanied by drawings, photographs or animations of architecture, artifacts and maps. Underlined words and a clickable glossary take the explorer to brief descriptions and images of arts and crafts, common occupations, temples, and gods. The site includes two simple off-line activities for creating dioramas and drawing Egyptian figures with a grid. The Nile File is presented by the Liverpool Museums in England and does contain unique English spellings of some common words.

This site can be a great introduction to a unit on Egypt for young learners. Put a link to this site on a classroom computer that can be used as an activity center for the Egyptian unit of study. Use an interactive whiteboard or projector to take the entire class on an interactive tour of life on the Nile.As a language arts activity, have students adopt the persona of an ordinary Egyptian and write a week-long journal or blog entries about their daily life. Tie in the visual arts by posing and tracing students' outlines on butcher paper on the floor. Students can strike an Egyptian-style pose that reflects their chosen person or occupation, and then draw in the clothing, headwear, and jewelry. Cut out these life-size images and combine them to create an Egyptian wall of stories. Let students fill in the background with hieroglyphic symbols.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has created a treasure trove of lesson plans and activities built around their stellar Egyptian collection. The educational resources integrate Egyptian art into language arts, social studies, math, science, and visual and performing arts. This would be a terrific launch point for a gifted enrichment unit. After exploring the various activities, students can create their own Egyptian-inspired artifacts for a classroom museum. Invite other classes for a student-docent tour of the museum. Discuss the stylized Egyptian figures that communicate ideas and stories and ask students to strike poses which others try to decipher. Students can add contemporary items to a time capsule and bury it somewhere on the school grounds to be discovered by future archeologists. This phenomenal website is all about levers. The website provides information about levers and how we use them everyday. It also has an awesome interactive challenge that requires Shockwave. The interactive is a challenge to use a lever to raise one end of an obelisk three feet off the ground. There is a teacher's guide that provides a detailed lesson plan. Check it out! Be sure to look at the non-Shockwave version.
