What is the Science of Reading? The Science of Reading refers to years of research in many fields, including brain science, that indicate effective strategies for teaching students to read. It is not a singular program, a simple recipe for teaching reading or phonics. And it is for every student, regardless of age or grade!

The Science of Reading consists of 5 pillars of reading instruction, which are:

  1. Phonemic awareness
  2. Phonics
  3. Fluency
  4. Vocabulary
  5. Comprehension

Students need to achieve proficiency in all of these areas. Struggling students will benefit from instruction based on the Science of Reading regardless of age or grade. Even if our students are proficient in reading they will still benefit from instruction based on the Science of Reading to support and elevate their skills.

It can be challenging to implement in any grade. For some, it requires a fundamental revamp of all reading instruction/ district curriculum. For others, it requires a change in student texts and classroom aides, and for most it requires some of both. Fortunately, many resources are available to support all elementary through high school teachers, special education teachers, and electives teachers! Professional development around the Science of reading comes in many forms, from training to books to podcasts.
