Soundcite is a free tool that embeds audio directly into portions of text for use on your blog or website. Use Soundcite to bring emotion or context to a story through the use of a real audio file, be sure to check out the examples for ideas. Follow the advice on the site to add short audio clips after uploading to your server. Before starting your Soundcite project, take the time to read and understand different options for uploading audio to blog providers such as Word Press and cautions against the use of Google or DropBox.

In the Classroom

Combine audio with text to bring life to student work. Share some examples with students before asking them to create Soundcite files. If you have some tech-savvy students, share this site with them before sharing with your whole class. Allow the tech-savvy students to create some examples and tutorials for all to use. Have these students transform classroom technology use and their learning by sharing step-by-step directions using a video explainer tool like My Simpleshow, reviewed here. Use Headliners to create and share videos in multiple ways. Set the stage for upcoming lessons by creating a video from an upcoming text, post the video on your class website for students to view before reading. Include the transcription feature when sharing videos of student discussions or classroom activities (with appropriate parental permission, of course). Promote your classroom podcast using the Audio Wizard to share a short preview of an upcoming podcast. As an alternative to a research report, use the Find My Content feature and have students redefine their technology use by creating a multimedia video filled with images and video based on their research.

Think of Fiskkit as a social media tool for sharing, discussing, and evaluating online articles similar to marking up a paper with a red pen. Copy and paste the URL for a news story into Fiskkit to input into the site. Once available, click on any sentence to rate or tag information as true/false, descriptive, or complimentary. Share the article with others to evaluate then view the graph showing tag distribution. After sharing the article with your class use your account to see student names that read the article, organize comments, and open individual sentences for classroom discussion.

Use Fiskkit in your classroom to teach students critical thinking and analysis skills. Share current news articles weekly with students to evaluate and discuss. After students provide their input, share the results on your interactive whiteboard to review and discuss the reactions as a group. As students evaluate articles, replace paper note cards and suggest they use an online note-taking tool similar to Webnote, reviewed here. Webnote allows you to add sticky notes on the computer workspace and share with others using the URL created. Challenge students to find articles they would like to discuss, save, and collaborate on using SearchTeam, reviewed here. SearchTeam offers you tools to bookmark and save websites, with the additional feature of allowing participants to add comments to saved information. SearchTeam can be used for a variety of assignments in any classroom that is integrating technology as an enhancement. Instead of a written report, as students become more comfortable with evaluating online tools, ask them to use a multimedia presentation tool like Sway, reviewed here, to modify technology use and to discuss media bias and offer tips for evaluating online information.

Use Edward as an excellent tool for helping students manage and organize any writing project. Instead of hand-written outlines, ask students to use Edward and share a screenshot of their project before beginning to write. Ask students to share with peers and help each other begin to organize writing. As students work toward completion of writing assignments, ask them to use Peergrade, reviewed here, to upload their work and enhance classroom technology use and their learning by collaborating with peers to make final revisions. As students move along within the writing process, include each piece as part of the overall assessment instead of just the final project. Premiere Rush is an all in one app for creating, editing, and sharing videos. Download Premiere Rush and use it across any device. Access your work from anywhere with the site's cloud storage feature. Use your Adobe account to log in either on your computer or with the app for your mobile device. Create a project by importing video, images, or audio. Use the editing features to edit, add titles, transitions, and much more. Easily share finished projects using social media links. Share Premiere Rush with students to use as an editing option when creating videos for any topic. If students are old enough, let them create their own account to take advantage of the free offerings. Upload videos and images from student projects or field trips to create a video to share on your webpage. Instead of a traditional research project, offer students the option to transform their learning by using Premiere Rush (or another video editing tool) to create a multimedia project. Sway will transform your classroom technology use since it is a comprehensive digital product including images, text, web links, and video.

Edji is a collaborative classroom reading tool that offers options for you to interact with text. Use this site to share text, then have readers highlight and add written and audio comments to portions of text. Also, use Edji to allow readers to add comments within pictures, even selecting a specific part of an image to share a response. Create your account to start a new reading using your email or Google account. Use security features to make readings public or private and choose from grade level options. Type or paste text and use options to insert images or PDF's. Create a group for sharing, and Edji provides a URL and code for students to access your work. Use the Heat Vision feature to view the finished product with highlights and comments shared by all readers.

In the Classroom

Check with your school's tech department for the appropriate procedure for adding this tool to classroom computers. This very handy tool serves many purposes. As a substitute for handwritten notes, have students take a screenshot and add information to document research findings. If students are stuck at a specific point on a web page or when working with a web tool, ask them to take a screenshot and add their question then share it with you. Augment learning by having students take screen shots to upload into a video presentation. Use a tool similar to Rawshorts, reviewed here, that can be used to create short, animated video explanations. Take screenshots of new websites you share with students and add notes on how to use the tool or create a video recording by screen sharing how to use any site. Share your images on your class website for students to access at any time or use your images to create a simple explainer video using Biteable, reviewed here.

For example, in short stories have students highlight foreshadowing events, character clues, or descriptive phrases. Have students use the documenyt to create an annotated image of the excerpt from the story using Thinglink, reviewed here. Thinglink can be used for a variety of assignments in any classroom that is integrating technology as an enhancement, modification, or transformation. With Thinglink you can add narration, links to text, videos, and images to provide details explaining the original document.

Use ReClipped to make sharing portions of videos easier by including only the segments needed. Add notes or questions for students to follow. Create a classroom board to share with students highlighting important information for any topic. Ask students to create their own snippets to share information or back up their point of view. Have tech-savvy students create their own videos and make snippets demonstrating how to use different features of ReClipped. After viewing longer videos, ask students to create snippets of what they consider to be the most critical portions and use the annotation feature to explain their choice.

Upload your CSV file to begin and follow the steps to choose the best type of chart for your dataset. Options include bar, line, or scatter plots. Follow additional steps to label and annotate your chart. When finished, save your work as a PNG, SVG, or animated GIF. Collect data in your classroom and quickly create a graph to represent it. Share through links or adding images to blogs, wikis, or websites. Share graphs on an interactive whiteboard or projector for better analysis of data by the class, then add comments and notes. Graph results of a test, answers from students, favorite foods, fictitious budgets, class schedules, and whatever else is applicable in your classroom. Use an informational text, and have students create a pie chart to understand how to read charts that accompany the informational texts. Have cooperative learning groups create graphs to share with the class on the class wiki. Create quick pie charts on your interactive whiteboard whenever you count class votes or encounter other data so students "see" data visualized on a regular basis; visual students will have another way to absorb the information. Keep the link handy on your web page to access it quickly in or out of class. Assess students' understanding of any chart by uploading one and having the student annotate the information.

Loom is a Chrome browser extension for creating quick and easy video screen recordings up to five minutes long. Download and install the extension following directions on the site. Loom allows you to record the entire desktop, just an application, or use the computer camera for recording. When finished, Loom automatically saves the recording and provides the URL for sharing through Gmail or social accounts.

Download and install Loom on classroom computers using Chrome. Have students make screen recordings to share how to use websites or software with their peers. Ask students to create a recording to demonstrate where to find information on a website, or point out specific areas of difficulty when working on a computer. Share a link to videos you create on your website to demonstrate specific instructions on finding information on the computer or how to get started on a computer game. Although only available in Chrome at the time of this review, Loom states that it is working on making the download available for other browsers in the future.

Create a slideshow, invitations, or photo collages for any classroom presentation. In the younger grades, teachers would be the ones creating the project. However, older students could easily create one themselves! Have students create their own DesignBold presentations. Have students use this online tool as they would any presentation tool or image enhancing site. Use this site for research projects about famous people from the past and present. Have cooperative learning groups create presentations about science or math topics. Have students create presentations to "introduce" themselves to the class during the first week of school. In the Classroom

Use Highly to collect and organize information for lessons throughout the year. Share with older students (age 13+) -- if school policies permit -- to use when collaborating on projects or as a resource for gathering and organizing information for year end review. Quick Note is a Chrome browser extension for quickly taking notes while using Chrome. Install the extension according to directions. Add notes while browsing any web page using the extension link, or from the right-click menu. Quick Note also offers a search feature for finding previous notes. Cloud storage provides the ability to access notes from anywhere. If you use Diigo, connect Quick Note and access and add notes from your Android device.

Use Quick Note to create notes to remember when sharing specific web pages with students. Science and math students can jot down the steps or reminders of what they did in a lab or math problem. History students can take notes on the text they are reading. Students in all subjects can take notes for a test or create questions for a test on Quick Note. Language Arts students can keep track of characters in an online novel and write responses as they read. Writing students can use this tool as a place to jot down ideas or first drafts.

The scientific research behind WriterReader is that one develops and improves their reading skills by writing. With WriteReader kids create their own books, including text, pictures, and voice recordings. Adults/Teachers have their own space on the page to write comments and make corrections. The interface is so simple even a young child can use it successfully after some adult guidance. Register with email or your Google account and find a downloadable Teachers Guide, a Parent Letter, and a Lesson Plan online to get kids started with WriteReader. Click "Add a class..." and enter students manually, or students can join the class with a class code. Languages available are US English, UK English, Dansk (Danish) and Svenska (Swedish). There is also an introductory video that will help everyone get started. This video resides on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the video may not be viewable. You could always view the video at home and bring it to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as Freemake Video Converter, reviewed here, to download the video from YouTube.

In the Classroom

WriteReader is so simple very young students can use it successfully after a demonstration using a whiteboard or projector. While creating their books students will be able to add images, multiple pages and delete pages, include voice-over, use color on the pages, view one page at a time or the entire book, and toggle between letters' names/sounds or no audio. Use this tool to design simple projects using student drawings to tell the story. At the beginning of the year have students draw and annotate stories to tell about their summer and share with classmates. Students of any age love to draw, so why not have them draw their impression of what the message to the reader was after hearing a story and then explain it in writing? ESL/ELL students especially will benefit from hearing the letter sounds as they are beginning to write in their new language.

Hypothesis is an easy to use tool for annotating, collaborating, and sharing web content. Add any URL to the search bar on the home page to begin using Hypothesis after creating your account. Create an annotation by highlighting text; the pop-up allows you to add notes including hyperlinks and tags to your annotation. Add notes or highlights using tools on the site. Save your notes for public viewing or just for your use. Invite others to view your notes or collaborate using the sharing link with your personal URL or with social media links. Use Ponder to annotate and analyze text with Chrome or FireFox browsers or iOS. Using Ponder with your browser will measure reading activity through sharing and commenting on texts anywhere on the web. Highlight sentences, phrases, and words that evoke a response. There can be sentiments to tag that indicate confusion, evaluation, disapproval, and more. For a fee, all of this can be applied to PDFs and video on the web. Ponder has a comprehensive support section and guide.

In the Classroom

Track students' reading and develop close reading skills and critical thinking with Ponder. Register with your email and create a Ponder group by clicking on "give it a spin" in the upper right corner of the home page. Then, give the class a name, and save the group by creating an administrator account. All directions for doing this are in the support section, as are the directions for adding additional classes. Ponder will bulk create accounts for your class, with no student email required. Just contact their support. Find an article or any text you want students to read on the web. Responding to an article on the web will initiate the class activity feed. Start out by sharing text (article, book, etc.) on an interactive whiteboard or projector with your students. Read through the text with them, asking them for feedback along the way. By doing this, you will be able to show students the features of Ponder. When you create a micro-reading response, it will post to the class activity feed along with a link to the article. Ponder is a wonderful tool to moderate reading in any core class. ESL/ELL and resource teachers can gain greater insight to their students' reading comprehension.
