Are you looking for a way to share, organize, and document volunteer opportunities? Golden is your answer. Sign up with Golden and begin importing and creating lists of volunteers. Share opportunities to any group and collect registrations within the site. Use the messaging features to send updates and relevant information to volunteer groups. The free school account offers 3 user logins to manage your account.

Many schools require students to volunteer, use Golden to help manage your school's volunteer program. Be sure to use the sharing features to place volunteering opportunities on your district, school, and class websites. Help students understand the value of volunteering by taking their work beyond just time spent. Use an online bulletin board like Corkboard, reviewed here, to share and brainstorm areas of student interest with the understanding that volunteering will be more meaningful if it is something chosen by the student and not viewed as a required assignment. Encourage students to document their volunteering by taking photos and videos throughout the experience. Consider extending classroom technology by asking students to create a podcast using Buzzsprout, reviewed here, to encourage others to volunteer by sharing their personal stories and reflections upon their own experience. As a reflection activity, and to modify classroom technology use, ask students to create and share a presentation using Sway, reviewed here. Use Sway to include images, text, and more to tell their volunteering story.

tag(s): bookmarks (60), preK (283)

In the Classroom

3x3 Links is an excellent tool for efficiently managing online resources in your classroom. For younger students, use this site as the home page on classroom computers. Add direct links to sites for student use or create folders for each subject. This site allows the creation of multiple grids, create a grid for each content unit or semester. Use the embed code to add the grid to your class webpage. For older students, this site is perfect for organizing and sharing resources for study or research projects. As an example, if your students are doing a research report on a state, ask them to create a grid to include folders linking to different topics including famous people, population information, geography, and history. Although there is an option to create up to 9 cubes in your grid, it isn't necessary so the number of cubes can be suited to fit your needs.

Beyondpad is an organizing tool on steroids! Use this tool to create templates to track time spent on any task, build checklists, take notes, and save online information. Add tags to any item to unify and organize information. Upcoming features include images, calendars, and maps. Be sure to go into Beyondpad's Demo Mode for hands-on practice with all of the site's features. Beyondpad also includes apps for Chrome, Windows, and Firefox. The Demo Mode will not save your work unless you sign in with email and password or one of several social media accounts. At the time of this review there was one introduction video and it resides on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the video may not be viewable. You could always view it at home and bring it to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as Freemake Video Converter, reviewed here, to download the videos from YouTube.

In the Classroom

Create a class account to organize information into one easy to access place. Spell out the use of the site and what is allowed and not allowed -- and the penalties. Even though all students have the same login, create different notebooks for different tasks that students can use to upload information to be shared by all. Create separate accounts for student groups who can then share their notebook with other groups. Use tags to easily find and identify specific information. Create checklists of steps in a project. Place all notes in one place, so you do not forget. Use this tool easily in a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) classroom since all students will be able to access it for free, no matter what device they have. It may take some time to learn all of Beyondpad's many features, start by adding basic information and find out more as you begin to use this tool.
